Carla (JALEO!): Welcome to Madrid, thank you for having us! It’s your first time playing in Madrid, first time playing in Spain as well. How are you feeling about it?
¡Bienvenidos a Madrid!
Dan (The Velvet Hands): Excited! Yeah, it’s a beautiful city, it’s one of these places you turn up and you know it’s a great vibe everywhere, so we’re gonna keep that going tonight.
¡Ilusionados!
Carla (JALEO!): What do you expect from Spanish crowds?
¿Qué os esperáis del público español?
Toby (The Velvet Hands): No idea! We’ve been on tour in France for the last month or so, so yeah, a bit different? I don’t know.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): We expect you to show up the French!
¡Esperamos que superéis a los franceses!
Carla (JALEO!): I think we can do better.
Creo que podemos hacerlo mejor que ellos.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We love bands from Madrid.
Nos encantan las bandas de Madrid.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): Yeah, we love Hinds.
¡Sí! Nos encantan las Hinds.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We’re excited to be here.
Carla (JALEO!): We want to get to know you a bit better as a band. You’re from Cornwall, right? How did you all meet? How did the band start?
Queremos conoceros un poco mejor como banda. Sois de Cornwall, ¿verdad? ¿Cómo os conocisteis? ¿Cómo empezó la banda?
Dan (The Velvet Hands): We went to school together, that’s how it started. So there was no choice.
Fuimos al colegio juntos, así empezó. No había otra.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We went to school together and then the drummer, Louis, he’s my brother so I met him the day he was born. Me and Dan have been writing songs since we were 15 or whatever, and that’s it! I haven’t known him longer than I have known you now.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): That’s a weird thing to say out loud!
Se siente raro decirlo en voz alta.
Carla (JALEO!): You’ve been a band for like, around a decade now, that’s a long time now.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): We were super young when we started so we were like, you know, figuring it out a little bit.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We’re super old now!
Carla (JALEO!): Now you’re London-based. You moved from Cornwall to London, obviously that has made you become bigger as a band, made you have the opportunity to get to a new audience, broaden your fanbase. How do you think this has impacted your way of making music? Going from a place like Cornwall to such a fast-paced city like London.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): I think it’s good, I think we have to be challenged now the way things happen fast. A lot of bands in Cornwall get a bit, like, comfortable because you can be the best band in that town but out of it it means nothing. If you’re the best band in London that means something in the world really, whereas in Cornwall it doesn’t, you kind of get lazy. I don’t know, that happens to a lot of bands and they left it there whereas we wanted a challenge, to keep it going.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We still go down to Cornwall to record as well. We’re based in London, and live in London, and write all the songs in London and then we take them to Cornwall to the studio and record down there.
Aún volvemos a Cornwall a grabar.
Carla (JALEO!): So like your first album, that was wrote, recorded and produced, everything was made in Cornwall but then your second album, Sucker Punch, that one was made in London, right?
Toby (The Velvet Hands): Written in London but still recorded in Cornwall! The first album was in like a warehouse, that was really DIY, and then for the second album we went into a recording studio to record it.
Carla (JALEO!): So in the end you ended up coming back home to be able to record the album.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): And we play big shows down in Cornwall, like it’s good fun. You know, it’s like we got two homes. We got London where we’ve lived for the last ten years, we got a big crowd, and then Cornwall where we go home and have a good crowd down there.
Nueva música de The Velvet Hands
Carla (JALEO!): You’ve got your two albums but you released an EP called The Caller back in 2025, you’ve got your latest single called Joyride that you released back in March this year. What can we expect from you? New album maybe?
Dan (The Velvet Hands): Yeah! We’ve been writing in France like a month ago, just trying to get as much as possible before we go back to London because there’s so much going on all the time and we’ve been so busy touring, doing festivals and all that kind of stuff so we don’t have time to finish any ideas so we went out there for a week and just got, like, as much as possible, so we’ve got pretty much almost an album now.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We rented like a house in Bordeaux and did like The Rolling Stones on Exile on Main St. when they’re did it in the South of France, so we did that vibe, you know, there was a swimming pool, wrote some amazing songs, it was good fun!
Carla (JALEO!): I know you can’t say much of what you’ve written but we want to know about what has influenced you when it comes to making new music and making your sound develop. I’m not talking bands or anything you’ve been looking up to since you were a kid but things that have inspired you recently. Could be a band, a different artist, whatever.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): Being in Bordeaux, where we wrote the album it really changed the music cause it was sunny outside and it was way more relaxed, so it kind of has a slightly happier feel to it, I wouldn’t go that far, but whereas the second album sounds a lot like rainy London, this has got a bit more of sunshine to it. We’re gonna play a couple of those songs for you tonight actually as well, that’s an exclusive, so you’re gonna be the first ones to hear it, you’re gonna have to let us know what you think!
Dan (The Velvet Hands): If it’s bad don’t mention it! No but there’s so much going on, just keeping ourselves busy and absorbing as much music and art as we can. I don’t think we have been consciously thinking about it, I think it’s our subconscious and it just comes out when we’re writing little bits here and there. We’re getting better at playing, we’re getting better at writing the songs so I kind of guess that ourselves?
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We’ve kind of changed the way we have been writing. The way that we do is we kind of got the music first and write the melodies, and then we kind of nail the lyrics after. It’s kind of the location of where we’ve been writing the lyrics and stuff like that, we’ve kind of been trying out different things. We wrote Joyride in a pub in London, me and Dan sat there with the notebook in between us, just throwing lines back and forth, and yeah we’ve been kind of trying to do different ways. Sometimes we have a line and we bring each other back notes and lines and sometimes we meet up and do it in person, it’s fun.
Carla (JALEO!): Also, you’ve shared the stage with so many big artists. We’re talking Liam Gallagher, we’re talking Fontaines D.C., we’re talking Yungblud at BLUDFEST and now you’ve just wrapped up a tour with The Molotovs. How is it to share the stage with all these big people? Or to so many different crowds as well!
Dan (The Velvet Hands): It’s good, we always get a nice reception from everybody so I guess we kind of just like, I don’t know, they like us so it works. Also, all of these guys are super nice, I don’t think anybody’s been a bastard, I think. Us, maybe. I don’t know, I don’t really think about it that much, you don’t have time. You’re always running around, we’re grateful that they’ve let us come along.
Carla (JALEO!): That means you know how to handle a crowd.
Eso significa que sabéis tratar al público.
República Checa, Francia y España: las nuevas audiencias de The Velvet Hands
Toby (The Velvet Hands): I do think about it a lot actually. From show to show, it’s kind of funny you know, cause you can walk out and the age changes, the demographic changes. At BLUDFEST, that was in Prague, with Yungblud, The Molotovs has been France, Liam Gallagher was England, so the crowds are really different, and it’s kind of how you deal with them, I think.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): I suppose it’s more your challenge than mine.
Creo que ese es más tu reto que el mío.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): Yeah, I’m the one that does the talking on stage.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): I’m not allowed to anymore.
A mí ya no me dejan.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): It’s an honour to play for all these different people. Also, to see Fontaines, cause that was at the beginning of their career, and we’ve kind of known them a bit from just hanging around in London, and to see them go all the way… They’re fucking massive now, I didn’t realise how big they are.
Carla (JALEO!): Is there any song you’ve been playing through all these years that you can never get tired of? This one song where you’re like “yeah, we’re never gonna stop singing this one live”.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We have this song called Party’s Over, which ended the first album for us, and we’ve kind of played that one every night.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): In this tour with The Molotovs, it’s the first time we didn’t play it cause it’s a bit longer, and we just wanted to get a super punky show and we only get like half an hour, but yeah we’ve pretty much played that every single gig ever.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): It’s got a great sing-along part at the end which we always get everyone to join along.
Carla (JALEO!): Is there any song that has made you argue within the band? One you’ve said “we don’t really want this one live” or a song that has almost made it to the set but hasn’t?
Toby (The Velvet Hands): Our song 3AM on The Caller EP nearly fucking broke up the band, actually. We spent so long in the studio on it, and we kind of thought it was going too cheesy, then we thought maybe it wasn’t cheesy enough and then we went on loops, and loops, and loops.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): So many different choruses, we left it for 6 months.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We left it, and then we listened to it and we thought “This is fucking great”, so we just put it out there.
Carla (JALEO!): Okay so let’s say, let’s hope this doesn’t happen but let’s say you all break up. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen but now you have to create the band again. If you had to pick one singer, one guitarist, one bassist and a different drummer, out of famous people or artists in different bands, what would be the new Velvet Hands? Who would it be?
Toby (The Velvet Hands): I’m gonna go with Bono.
Yo voy a escoger a Bono.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): The Edge!
¡The Edge!
Toby (The Velvet Hands): I’m gonna go Bono on vocals. Who’s gonna go on the drums?
Bono como cantante. ¿Quién podría ir en la batería?
Dan (The Velvet Hands): Chad Smith! And then we could pick someone random.
Chad Smith! Y luego podemos escoger a alguien aleatoriamente.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers. You know, Louis, our drummer, as much as he fucking pains me because he’s my brother, he’s probably the best drummer I’ve ever met in my life, so I think Louis could maybe stay. So we’re doing Bono on vocals, Johnny Fender on the guitar, we’ll pick a random audience member every night to play the bass.
Dan (The Velvet Hands): Anyone on bass, anyone can do that.
Futuro de The Velvet Hands: nueva música y nueva gira
Carla (JALEO!): That is a good one! We’ve got one last question, we always ask this to everyone we interview and, well, what can we expect from The Velvet Hands in the future? We know you’ve got a show in Barcelona tomorrow, you’ve got a gig in London to finish the year but what do you have in store for us for the next few months?
Dan (The Velvet Hands): More! And bigger!
¡Más y más grande!
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We’re gonna come back to Europe in April, we’re gonna put out a record, we’re gonna do a summer full of festivals, and then we’re gonna come back to Europe in November… It’s gonna be amazing, we’re gonna be so fucking busy and kind of everywhere as long as you’re in Europe.
Carla (JALEO!): That’s amazing! So, hopefully, you’ll be back here soon.
Eso es increíble. Esperamos que volváis juntos entonces.
Toby (The Velvet Hands): We will be back!
¡Estaremos de vuelta!
